I picked up this book as a recommendation from a friend. It's funny how the English language is " A Tale of Two Cities" and this book really brought that out. This book was relatable (Corporate BS, Ego boosting, small talk) and helped me analyze my own usage of the English language. It really makes me want to reduce on the amount of fillers, and really be more direct. The author provided great examples and I found this really entertaining. A short recap was also provided at the end of each chapter. Mr. Will Jelbert, if you are reading this review, my short term memory / attention span thanks you for it! lol but really, if you are reading this, great job! I'm going to check out "The Happiness Animal" next! “Word Wise” is, as the name implies, concerned with words. But, more than anything else, “Word Wise” is concerned with the words that lead to poor and unproductive conversations and connections and, in turn, the words that lead to strong, productive, and fulfilling conversations and connections.The whole point of reading “Word Wise” is so that you can become wise with the words that you choose, and refrain from engaging in “word trash”, which is a term that’s defined in “Word Wise”.Throughout “Word Wise”, Will Jelbert, the author, looks at the words and phrases that people often use and why those words and phrases are inadequate. To me, this was the most interesting part of the book, because Will Jelbert doesn’t just talk about those words and how to replace them, he goes to the very heart of the matter and engages with the world view that those words and phrases affirm, and the inherent problems with that world view.Just as an example of this, there’s a part in the book very early on, where Will Jelbert talks about the word “should” and how it is, as a word, inherently obfuscatory and dishonest. But, he doesn’t just stop there, he also writes about the ways in which using this word too often - and plenty of other words that fall under the “word trash” category - disconnect us from ourselves and others.But, of course, “Word Wise” doesn’t just stop there. Right around the halfway-point, “Word Wise” becomes all about the best words and phrases to use and why these words and phrases are healthy, supportive, and powerful. I found myself using those words and phrases far more than I ever had, and being far more considerate of what I was saying and why I was saying it. This will, I am sure, lead to some very profound changes in my life.In the end, “Word Wise” is a fantastic book! If you are looking for a fantastic book on how to be a better communicator - towards others and yourself - then “Word Wise” is a wonderful read!
